Acoustic Routes presents an evening of Cape Breton fiddle music – the music of the Scottish Highlands brought to Canada by impoverished immigrants in the early 19th Century – featuring three of the Northeast’s most acclaimed traditional musicians. 

Called the “The new face of Scottish fiddling in the USA” (The Living Tradition), Katie McNally has made waves in both the American folk music scene and abroad since the release of her debut album, Flourish, in 2013. Katie attended both The University of Glasgow and The National Piping Centre in Glasgow Scotland where she studied ancient and modern Scottish Literature and Scottish traditional music.

A Michigan native living in Boston, fiddler Rachel Reeds has immersed herself in the Cape Breton and Scottish musical traditions and has become a familiar face at sessions, camps, workshops, and house parties around New England. Rachel is the 2013 New England Regional Scottish Fiddle Champion.

Neil Pearlman is emerging as one of the traditional music scene’s most innovative young artists. Legendary Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland said that “watching Neil’s hands on the piano is like watching two spiders on crack!” His piano style is rooted in Cape Breton traditions while drawing on Latin, jazz and funk influences. The result is an exciting new sound that remains true to its traditional roots. An accomplished Cape Breton step dancer and mandolinist as well, Neil grew up in the family band Highland Soles.
