An Evening with Celtic Guitar Virtuoso Tony McManus

Join is in the intimate 50-person tasting room of Stony Lake Brewing for an evening with Tony McManus, listed as one of the 50 transcendental guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine and hailed by John Renbourn as ‘the best Celtic guitarist in the world,’

Born in Paisley, near Glasgow, Tony’s surname is the legacy of an Irish grandfather, McManus. His fiendishly dexterous, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic diaspora – Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, Cape Breton, Quebec – along with still further-ranging flavors, such as jazz and east European music.

Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose the delicate, complex ornamentation characteristic of traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes – even the phrasing of a Gaelic song – onto his own six strings, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other guitar genres.

Please note: we have open seating (but can accept reservations for large groups by calling the Brewery) so arrive early and enjoy some fine ales. 100% of the ticket price goes to the artist.

Ypsi Double Bill: Timothy Monger & Brawny Lad

Ypsi Double Bill: Timothy Monger & Brawny Lad

Tonight we have a double bill!

Ypsilanti singer/songwriter Timothy Monger fuses melodic indie pop with folk instrumentation and lyrics that celebrate literature, nature, offbeat characters, and an abiding love of the arcane. An enduring presence among Southeast Michigan's indie landscape, Monger rose to prominence in the mid-2000s as co-leader of Ann Arbor cult favorites Great Lakes Myth Society. Tonight, he's performing as a duo with singer, violinist, and percussionist Carol Catherine.

Brawny Lad is a trio, also from Ypsilanti, consisting of Tom McCartan on upright bass and vocals, Davey Jones on banjo and lilting harmonies, and Tom Green on pedal steel. Their sound is a unique blend drawing from a number of American musical traditions. The effect teeters somewhere between high lonesome and Midwestern esotericism.

Fall Blues Party with Shari Kane & Dave Steele!

As an acoustic blues duo, Shari and Dave throw a four handed guitar party of original and time-honored blues, gospel, swing and ragtime.

Steeped in Dave’s smoky vocals, percussive rhythm and innovative lead lines, Shari’s crisp picking style, rootsy leads, and stinging slide work, their music has been described as “street swing and stomp blues,” – like a testament to sounds once heard on the streets of Harlem, the juke joints of Mississippi, the Carolina hills or the jug bands of Memphis.

SOLD OUT - Odesa’s KOMUNNA LUX Brings Their Support Ukraine Tour to Stony Lake Brewing

Hailing from the multi-cultural port city of Odesa, this seven-piece band blends the traditional Jewish folk style of Klezmer music with common gangster folk songs from their hometown of Odesa, which houses one of Ukraine’s largest and most vibrant Jewish communities.

It’s klezmer music with a dose of rocket fuel and part of a U.S. fundraising tour to raises critical funds to support ongoing war and civilian needs in Ukraine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QSuTAjiDvM

A new generation of Ukrainians have embraced these 100-year-old Bohemian and nostalgic songs, which have survived multiple bans during the Soviet era as well as Russia’s ongoing war that has targeted the economic and cultural pillars of the country.

According to The New York Times, “More than two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, folk music is enjoying a surge of popularity in the war-torn nation. Faced with Moscow’s efforts to erase Ukrainian culture, people have embraced traditional songs as a way to reconnect with their past and affirm their identity.”

The band is named after “kommunalka,” a shared housing concept in the former Soviet bloc prevalent in Odesa and other large cities. “Lux,” meanwhile, is a nod to the joy of their community.

All seven musicians are classically trained, blending vocals with clarinet, accordion, trumpet, trombone, acoustic guitar and percussion for a high-energy sound.

Like all Acoustic Routes Concerts at Stony Lake Brewing, 100% of the ticket proceeds are paid to the artists. We have open, family style seating so reserve your spots now and come early to enjoy hand-crafted ales. Please call Stony Lake directly if you have a large group.

SOLD OUT - An Evening with Peter Case - Plimsouls Founder and Three-time Grammy Nominee

Three-time Grammy nominee Peter Case, a rocker who helped usher in what we know today as Americana music, is bringing his incredible songwriting gifts to Stony Lake Brewing in Saline.

As a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones, Mink DeVille, Pere Ubu, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone,” was covered by Blondie.

In 1979, Case formed the Plimsouls, a record-breaking live act in California, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single, “A Million Miles Away,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIxgBMNhsKU) entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard.

After the Plimsouls, Case rediscovered his musical roots on his self-titled solo debut, produced by T Bone Burnett. The New York Times declared Peter Case the best album of 1986. It earned a five-star Rolling Stone review and a Grammy nomination.

As one of the first songwriters of his generation to turn from rock music toward an acoustic sound, Case also helped usher in what became known as Americana music with songs like “Two Angels” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRXS6V_LPf4

He made his network television debut on Late Night with David Letterman in 1992 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jltLomuNmao

“I try to take things I love and use them in a new way,” Case says of his 16th solo album, “Doctor Moan,” an 11-song collection, largely performed on piano. Released by Sunset Blvd Records on March 31, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally, sonically and stylistically rich. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUR3fgMSbCs

The Whiskey Charmers Live at Stony Lake Brewing

The Whiskey Charmers are a Detroit-based band led by Carrie Shepard and Lawrence Daversa. Fans have often compared their sound to riding through the desert with the top down, or the feeling of being in some lonesome smoky bar off the side of an abandoned highway, or music from a Spaghetti Western.

Check out Straight and Narrow (https://youtu.be/m2a5uGTcTGg?si=nIKRetU3Kz097nf-) and Nobody Cares (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYCngWqzDCk) and Late Night Driving (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38Q9DMtGXYk)

William P Davis (Former Deputy Director of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville) says of the band, “I’ve heard a lot of good musicians. The Whiskey Charmers remind me of no one – and, to me, that is one of the best compliments an act can receive.”

Ken Capobianco, Boston Globe Music Critic describes their latest release as a “sharply executed and evocative set of Americana rock filled with superbly arranged songs about the struggle to find connections, a sense of home, and a center in a ghost town of a world”.

Tony McManus Live - SOLD OUT

The cover is $20 and 100% goes to the artists.
